Justification of the mathematical model for selecting the main elements of a dry cargo vessel

Abstract

This article presents a mathematical model for the design of dry cargo vessels. This model allows for the early determination of optimal values for key vessel characteristics, taking into account operating conditions and regulatory requirements of the Russian Federation. The development of this model for dry cargo vessels is driven by the need to reduce design time, lower design costs, objectively assess the impact of design parameters on vessel performance, and automate the search for solutions under multiple constraints. The paper examines in detail the assumptions used in constructing the model, including idealized traffic conditions and performance calculation features. Particular attention is paid to constraints specific to the operation of dry cargo vessels in the Russian Federation: the dimensions of hydraulic structures (locks, bridges), channel depths, classification society requirements, and seasonal and hydrological conditions. The analytical relationships used in the design process are presented, along with a breakdown of the values they contain. These include the buoyancy equation, the mass equation (with details on displacement components), the propulsion equation (determination of resistance and required power), the stability equation, and the capacity equation. The developed model serves as an effective tool for informed design decisions, ensuring a balance of technical, economic, and operational requirements in the design of dry cargo vessels.
